When you're already in Hungary:Budapest has always been a place of crucial importance in the transport network of the country. Its key position became particularly evident as the railway system was expanding : eleven lines from east and west converge here before they cross the Danube. The three main railway stations (Nyugati, Keleti, Déli) are located on the edge of inner town residential areas. Eight arterial roads start - radially - from Budapest. Seven road bridges such as Árpád, Margit, Lánc-, Erzsébet, Szabadság, Petofi, the recently opened Lágymányos and two railway bridges span the Danube. The connection between the two banks is completed by the road bridges of the M0 motorway ring in the southern outskirts.Budapest has an efficient public transport network made up of more then 180 bus, 14 trolley, 29 tram and 3 metro lines. The length of the bus lines amounts to 360 kms.
Generally, buses, trams and trolleys in Budapest operate between 4:30 and 23:00.The three metro lines intersect at Deák tér, the town centre. The metros run at 2-15 minutes intervals from 4:30 to 23:10.
"Éjszakai járatok" (i.e. night buses) run from 23:30 to 4:30 following metro lines M2 and M3, and major tramline routes.
For making the sights in the suburbs Szentendre, Gödöllo and Ráckeve there are also suburban trains (HÉV).
The airports Ferihegy 1 and Ferihegy 2A and 2B are situated 20 kms from the city centre in south-eastern Budapest.
Budapest is also known as Danubian port. The Csepel free port adds to Budapest's international importance as fluvial port.
