| Wine region of the southern Dunántúl ( Transdanubia ) |
Now let's go to the wine region around the town of Szekszárd which has been famous for centuries. You are now in the home of fine and flavoursome red wines, where viticulture was originally established by the Romans. The traditional Szekszárdi kadarka wine and the blended Szekszárdi bikavér - similar to the one from Eger - represent a special quality on the wine market, and in international competitions.
The Kadarka (currently enjoying a renaissance), the Kékfrankos, the Cabernet Franc, the Cabernet Sauvignon are typical wines of this region.
Travelling further south, you find yourself in a Mediterranean-like climate. The Mecsekalja region offers a climate suitable equally to the production of red and white wines, and yet it is the white wines which are considered traditional.
You must try the cifrandli from Pécs, which is pleasantly tart with a bouquet of character and is among the outstanding local wines.
It's not even worth putting down the tasting glass, because you are on the first Hungarian Wine Trail, where you will find seven stops for tasting, from Máriagyűd, to Palkonya. The kékoportó of Villány, or the local Burgundy will surely win the favour of the gourmet, and even the bottled white wines such as the Villányi hárslevelű and Siklósi Italian Riesling will not fail to impress.
