The wine region of  Tokaj

Tokaj-Hegyalja       -       The national nectar

By the Middle Ages, Hungarian wines were a known and valued commodity in Europe.
Kings, queens and religious leaders all praised the outstanding quality of Hungarian wines. According to French legend, when Louis XIV first tasted Tokaj wine he exclaimed - This is the wine of kings, and the king of wines!
It is also a compliment that Czarina Katherine the Great of Russia provided an armed escort for her shipments of Hungarian wines.
Throughout its glorious history, this wine has signified blessing, even being mentioned in the national anthem : "From the grape vines of Tokaj you produced nectar...". The ancient traditions of wine and viticulture can be enjoyed in every glass of Szamarodni or Aszú. The numerous resurrections of these wine districts during their thousand year history were achieved not only by Hungarian hands, but also those of Germans and Italians.
The botrytis cinerea mould, together with the long sundrenched autumn days, lead to special fermentation, which, combined with a late harvest, differing soil types, technology, special ageing techniques and the hand finishing, make the Tokaj, which is now under protection, unsurpassed.
There are now 28 specialised viticulture districts, where mostly Furmint and Hárslevelű, and in smaller quantities Sárga muskotály and Oremust grape varieties are grown.

The Tokaj-Hegyalja region is not only a world renown wine region, but the home of Hungary's bible translators, the historical home of the Rákóczi aristocratic family who fought for the nation's freedom, and a place with many sights of beauty which will take your breath away.
